A new Quad Cities River Bandits Scholarship for Scott Community College (SCC) students was unveiled during a Wednesday afternoon press conference at Modern Woodman Stadium.

River Bandits Team Owner Dave Heller announced the team is donating $15,000 for establishment of the scholarship fund. Accepting the donation on behalf of the college was Eastern Iowa Community Colleges Chancellor Don Doucette. SCC is one of the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges that also includes Clinton and Muscatine Community Colleges.

“We are delighted to join with the River Bandits, a great partner and key community organization, to provide life-changing opportunities to earn college degrees to deserving students,” said Doucette. “We share with the River Bandits the same commitment to help the Quad Cities develop, attract and retain youthful talent and to build our community as a great place to live, work, become educated, raise families and have fun.”

The donation is part of the ongoing capital campaign to raise a total of $6 million; $1 million for SCC Scholarships and $5 million in capital support for the college’s new downtown Urban Campus.

“Giving away these scholarships is the single most enjoyable thing I do as owner of the River Bandits,” said Heller. “This scholarship program enhances our community and, by providing these scholarships to these great schools right here in the Quad Cities, we’re helping our young people get a first-rate education, saving families money, and helping make a great community even better.”

Criteria for the scholarship includes:

  • A Scott or Muscatine Community College student who has completed their first year with a GPA of 3.0 or greater and planning to attend a second year at SCC
  • Involved in athletics as a player, coach, trainer, broadcaster, and/or reporter
  • Actively involved through community service
  • Committed to making a life in the Quad Cities post-graduation
  • A resident of Scott, Rock Island, Cedar, Muscatine, Henry (IL), Mercer, Knox or Whiteside County
  • A U.S. Citizen

Students can apply for the Quad Cities River Bandits Scholarship through the SCC Foundation with an application deadline of March 1, 2018.

Fundraising for the college’s capital campaign has been a tremendous success. The college is at the 85 percent mark of its overall $6 million goal with contributions still coming in.

Construction of the new Urban Campus, located on West Third Street between Main and Brady in downtown Davenport, is well underway with an opening date for classes in January 2018.
