New Medical Assistant Program Information Session

Female student shining small flash light like in a doctor's examEastern Iowa Community Colleges is excited to announce a new Medical Assistant program beginning this fall. The Medical Assistant program prepares students to provide medical office administrative services and perform clinical duties under the supervision of physicians.

Interested students and others are invited to attend a June 5 information session, beginning at 5 p.m. It will be held at the new Scott Community College (SCC) Urban Campus, 101 W. Third Street, in Downtown Davenport. Program faculty will be on hand to answer all questions about the new program.

The one-year diploma program is designed for quick entry into the job market. The 10 classes in the program cover such areas as Medical Office Management and Procedures, Medical Terminology, Medical Lab Procedures and Pharmacology.

Students will also receive hands-on training, participating in an internship in local physician offices.

Medical assistants are responsible for patient intake and care, routine diagnostic procedures and taking patient histories. They can work in ambulatory care settings such as physicians’ offices, clinics and group practices.

The forecast for employment opportunities for medical assistants is one of rapid growth and is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations as the health care industry expands.

Helping to drive this growth is the increasing number of facilities and group practices that need support personnel who can handle both administrative and clinical duties.

The program will be housed at SCC’s Urban Campus. Just opening this year, the campus is more than 7,000 square feet in size and includes state-of-the-art technology.

To further assist students with busy work and family schedules, some classes may be available online or in the evenings.
