Martin Bros sponsors SCC Culinary Lab
Scott Community College’s Foundation recently announced that Martin Bros. is the new sponsor of the college’s Culinary Arts “Hot” Cooking Lab. The lab is part of the 10,000-square-foot SCC Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Center. Located on the main campus in Bettendorf, the $2.3 million center is less than 10 years old and provides labs that rival those found in the most modern restaurants, hotels and other culinary and hospitality businesses.
Based in Cedar Falls, Martin Bros. is a full-line distributor for the food service industry. Roy and Glen Martin founded Martin Bros. Distributing Co., Inc. in 1940 with great determination and a handful of cash. Their foundation was strong family values and an emphasis on customer relationships and “Legendary Customer Service”. Martin Bros. is now a regional distributor serving Iowa and seven surrounding states, made up of more than 600 experienced, knowledgeable employees.
The Hot Lab, sponsored by Martin Bros., is one of two cooking labs in the center. The other is the baking lab. To learn more about the center go to eicc.edu/culinarylab
SCC’s Culinary Program was founded in 1991 and has grown into one of the college’s largest. Two years ago it expanded and is now also enrolling students at Muscatine Community College.
Its unique delivery allows students to literally “earn while they learn,” attending classes in the college labs once a week and spending the rest of their time working apprenticeships in local restaurants and other food service establishments.
The Hospitality program is a more recent addition, established in 2007. It provides the training students need to work in local hotels, special events and related businesses.
