Bickelhaupt gardensHow fortunate we are in Clinton to have the Bickelhaupt Arboretum, a living classroom for all citizens in our community. A new Friends of the Arboretum group is being formed to ensure and continue the legacy of Robert and Frances Bickelhaupt. Over the course of the year, three programs (spring, summer and fall) will be offered to the Friends of the Arboretum in addition to one social event for Friends of the Arboretum during the August Arts at the Arb. Annual membership is $100 per person which will provide speaker assistance and support for Arts at the Arb.

The Bickelhaupt Arboretum story is about Bob and Frances Bickelhaupt, retirees who were avid walkers, traversing nearly every hill and corner of their beloved hometown of Clinton, Iowa. In the 1960s, Dutch Elm Disease began to destroy the beloved trees they enjoyed while on their many walks. With little to no horticulture knowledge, they decided that the devastation of Dutch Elm Disease demanded action. Their response was to create an educational arboretum in their own backyard to share with the community. They continued to live in their home on the property for many years to come after the arboretum opened. The house is now used as the offices and classroom spaces for the arboretum.

Today, 50 years later, the Bickelhaupt Arboretum continues to thrive as a living classroom and community treasure. In 2014, the Bickelhaupt Family donated the arboretum to Clinton Community College. The Bickelhaupt Arboretum showcases the natural beauty of the seasons throughout the year. Whether you are an adult who wanders the peaceful grounds or a little person in the “No Child Left Inside” program exploring the wonders of nature, you belong at the Arb. The CCC Bickelhaupt Arboretum is for us all!
