The Transportation Sector Board met in June of 2014 establishing development of a
strong pipeline of professional truck drivers as its priority.
The board indicated a need for assistance marketing to high schools and middle schools. Currently, the industry is short about 300,000 drivers and the average age of drivers is 57. There is a need for 100,000 drivers over the next 10 years to replace those retiring from the industry.
Board members noted that they are working with the state to address the high cost of insurance and doing business in Iowa.
There is a great interest in continued collaboration to develop marketing tools and resources that promote the industry and occupation in a professional manner. This board is moving toward expansion to include the logistics industry in its next steps.
