Rock Garden

The Rock Garden was designed by Arboretum Horticulturist  David Horst and Gary Whittenbaugh,  past president of the American Conifer Society-Central Region and alpine plant/rock garden expert.

The new garden was planted on the south facing slope just off the Learning Center. This area is well drained and in full sun which is best suited for the 31 different types of alpine, succulent and dwarf conifers.

Large natural limestone boulders were moved to the area to provide give and dimension to the plants placed in the rock garden. Natural limestone steps added later to give more dimension to the garden.

Once established the plants in the Rock Garden are low maintenance, survive on the moisture provided by nature and tolerate the rocky soil conditions. Visitors enjoy the texture and color of the foliage as well as the different plants blooming in the garden from March to September.
