Hosta Glen

In 1992 the underbrush from the wooded area on the west border of the Arboretum was cleared to make way for a new collection of plants.  Hosta had grown in popularity so it was fitting to add this group of plants to the Arboretum's collection.

The Hosta collection contains more than 252 species and cultivars.  A chipped natural curving path allows the plants to be viewed from both sides. The background extending into the woods consists of boxwood, lady and ostrich ferns and other shade loving plants.

The collection includes miniatures from two inches tall to extra large plants growing to 40 inches tall.  There are many colors, shades and variegations from a bright lime green to a dusty blue.

Also featured are many of the “Hosta of the Year” selected by the American Hosta Growers Association.  In 2004 the Arboretum was designated as a Hosta Display Garden by the American Hosta Society, one of only three in the State of Iowa.
