This is a summary of the requirements for an Associate in Arts (AA) degree with an Education concentration for students planning to transfer to Western Illinois University. The AA degree requires completion of both the general education curriculum and electives for a total of 62 semester hours.
Students should choose the recommended courses from the EICCD General Education curriculum and complete their AA degree by selecting courses that fulfill requirements for the College of Education. Any remaining electives should be selected from those that have an exact course equivalent at Western Illinois University and are required or recommended for their major.

Most teacher certification programs are 4 ½ years in length. Secondary education majors must select a subject area in which to major (EX: To teach History, the student is a History Ed. major in the College of Arts and Sciences). Students should consult the WIU catalog or admission contact for course requirements in addition to professional education.
Admissions
WIU-Macomb: Transfer students may be admitted with 24 semester hours and a 2.0 GPA or with fewer than 24 semester hours as long as students meet the freshmen admission standards, have at least a combined 2.0 GPA for all college work attempted from all institutions attended and are in good standing at the last college attended.
WIU-QC
Transfer students must have earned 60 or more semester hours (90 quarter hours) of college work with at least a combined 2.0 GPA for all hours attempted from all institutions attended and are in good standing at the last college attended.
General Education
Students who have completed an AA or AS degree will have met the WIU general education requirements and have junior standing. Students who do not complete an AA or AS degree should complete general education courses from WIU's approved list. Teacher Education Program (TEP) requires a grade of "C" or better in both English composition courses, speech and math (regardless if AA or AS degree completed). Graduation Requirement
Students must complete 60 semester hours at a four-year institution that includes 40 semester hours of upper division course work and 30 semester hours at Western.
Foreign Language: Western Ill. Univ. does not require foreign language for graduation.
TEP Requirement
As part of the entrance requirements to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) in Macomb, students must have completed at least 45 semester hours and have the appropriate GPA. WIU-QC students must have completed 60 semester hours with the appropriate GPA, and have completed the prerequisite and lower-level coursework.
IL Basic Skills Test
Students should have successfully completed the Basic Skills Test prior to attending WIU. Students who have not successfully completed the Basic Skills Test before attending WIU will be advised to do so during their first semester at WIU. Program delays will occur for students not in compliance with this requirement by their junior year. E-portfolio (TaskStream)
Students are given the opportunity to select entries to meet IL teaching standards for their own E-portfolio to include a minimum of 3 entries addressing 3 different standards with reflective statements. Students are encouraged, but not required, to retain coursework from their community college (papers, projects, audio or videotape of speeches/presentations, etc) for possible inclusion in their portfolio.
Requirements completed at Western
speech and hearing examination, a Technology Competency Assessment and an Illinois State Police background investigation (there is a charge) which will be completed again prior to student teaching.
