JUST DO IT!!
HOW TO GET OUT OF THE PROCRATINATION HABIT
Procrastination may be:
self-doubt
self-made
fear of success
indecision
disorganization
inadequate information
a habit
Temporary advantages of procrastination include:
satisfying the need to escape
maintaining the status-quo – avoids new
responsibilities
a great excuse for a poor performance
reducing time on unpleasant projects
not doing something unpleasant
How can procrastination stop?
1. Take care of yourself
a. you cannot complete a difficult project if you are
physically or mentally exhausted
b. keep fit; improve your life-style
c. work harder at fulfilling your sense of worth
2. Change the way you think
a. learn to accept change
b. believe you can (and will) change
c. tell yourself that there is no time like the present
to begin a task
d. begin to design clear goals
e. set your priorities
3. Break a bad habit with a good habit
a. you must act differently to be different
b. begin to break your big projects into smaller and
more manageable parts
c. reward yourself
d. avoid stressful last-minute-itis
Remember:
procrastination is learned early
it may difficult to stop; practice repetition,
reinforcement and reward
ask yourself, 'Am I cutting off my nose to spite my
face?'
rebelling against structure cuts off avenues of
growth
give yourself a pep-talk when needed
if you see yourself procrastinating – say it out loud
continue to stress the benefits of not procrastinating
don't dwell on how dreary/overwhelming the task
may be
set deadlines (prior to the real deadline)
when you start to procrastinate ask yourself if the
project will go away and what price will you pay
for the delay
NOW is a good time to get started. Good luck!!
