   Are You Ready for College?

1. Have you prepared for the rigors of college courses by taking college preparatory classes such as English, math and science? 

If you have weak academic areas, take developmental courses which will prepare you for college academic classes. 

2. Are you able to read, spell, write, and do math at the upper high school level? 

If not, make every attempt to raise your skills with extra
work outside of class.

3. Are you an independent learner? Can you get yourself motivated to do your assignments on time, attend every class, ask questions, and take responsibility for your own learning? 

These are required for success in college. Remember, you need to advocate for yourself, You must accept
responsibility for your own success. 

4. Can you use a word processor?

Applications)Most college assignments are done on a computer. Take a keyboarding class if you need to
become more proficient. 

5. Do you know your learning style?

You should be aware of how you learn best. Take a
learning styles inventory so you will understand
how you learn.

6. Can you explain to others how you learn? Under what conditions you learn best?

You need to identify these things for yourself to make
sure you understand how to learn.

7. Do you have a realistic career goal based on your personal strengths?

(HD141 Career Decision Making)  Find out about your
career choices so that you plan your major and your
courses with your strengths in mind. This should help
you find an attainable goal to reach. 

8. Are you a good manager of time? Do you organize your classes, study, work, and personal time effectively?

Do you keep a planner or master calendar and mark
dates of assignments that are due, appointments to
keep, and other deadlines? Do you organize your tasks according to priority?

It is your responsibility to meet deadlines. Penalties
are often imposed by instructors for late assignments.

ou are in charge of managing your own time and tasks.

9. Are you prepared to study at least two hours outside of class for every hour which you spend in a class? 

For many students, this is a major adjustment. You must keep up with the assignments. College classes contain
much information for you to digest in a short time. The classes move along quickly, lasting only 16 weeks.
You will be expected to keep up. 

10. Do you have good study skills?

You need to know how to study efficiently. Take a study
skills class if you need help. You need to know such
things as how to take notes during a lecture, how to
become an active reader, how to use memory strategies,
how to get organized, how to manage your time, and
how to mark a textbook
