What Technical Knowledge Do I Need To Know?

You don't have to be technologically savvy to take an online course. However, you must be comfortable with your system and be willing to deal with any problems that may arise. Hardware (and software) breaks down when you least expect it. 

To do well in an online course, you should be familiar with the following:

• Use of a Web browser
• Use of a standard word processor (Microsoft Word)
• Handling e-mail, including sending e-mail attachments
• Understanding and respecting netiquette
• Basic file management
• Downloading software
• Finding information on the internet
• Completing online forms
• Troubleshooting minor technical issues with programs or your computer

Minimum technical requirements include the following:

• Access to a modern PC or Macintosh system capable of running the Web browsers
• Reliable e-mail software and active e-mail account
• Reliable internet access (from home, college, work, or another facility)
• Modem speed of 56k; High-speed Internet access (DSL, cable modem, etc.) strongly recommended
• Printer strongly recommended
• Sound card and speakers strongly recommended

Your course may require special plug-ins (free) to access streaming media and other specialized software.
