How Sweet! March Food Classes

Peanut BrittleAs the weather seems to be turning the corner to warmer days, people are looking for new ways to get out of the house. Eastern Iowa Community Colleges’ Continuing Education Department offers many cooking classes that provide the perfect opportunity to have fun whether individually or with friends.

Unless otherwise noted, the hands-on classes are held at the college’s West Davenport Center, 2950 N. Fairmount St., from 6 - 9 p.m. and cost $19 each.

How Sweet!  satisfies the sweet tooth with toffee, peanut brittle, fudge and more. Students should bring a container for leftovers. Class will be held March 17, course number 136447.

Curry in a Hurry covers how to make mouth-watering exotic dishes from India in little time. Class will be held March 18, course number 135996.

A Little Something to Go with Your Coffee provides something to go with tea or coffee including biscotti, scones and sour cream coffee cake. Class will be held March 19, course number 135756.

Cream Puffs shows how to make those tender hollow little cream puff shells with Pate Choux (pot-s-shoo) dough. Students will make their own dough and create eclairs and cream puffs as well as pastry dough, whipped cream and chocolate ganache. Class will be held March 20, course number 135839.

Spring Brunch Entertaining will feed a crowd on a budget and still be elegant with ham and egg casseroles, and bourbon pecan cinnamon rolls. This class will be held from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., March 20, course number 136020.

Process This! makes everything in a blender including hummus, salsa verde, fruit salsa, baba ghanoush and homemade nut butter. To go with it, the class will make pita bread and fresh tortilla chips. Students are asked to bring a food processor if they have one and containers for leftovers. Class will be held March 24, course number 135831.

Breakfast in Paris provides participants the opportunity to get the feel of a small Parisian café with butter, almond and chocolate croissants as well as café au lait. Class will be held March 25, course number 135846. This class will be held at Pleasant Valley High School, 604 Belmont Road, Bettendorf.

The college is also offering a March 25 Chicago Ethnic Neighborhoods trip. The chartered bus trip includes the French Market, Italian store, Polish meat market, German pharmacy and a Greek bakery or two. Participants should bring a cell phone and cooler.

The bus departs at 7 a.m. , returning at approximately 8:30 p.m., from the Kimberly Center for Alternative Education, 1002 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport. Cost of the trip is $79 and the class number is 135809.
