fried chickenUpcoming cooking classes from Eastern Iowa Community Colleges’ Continuing Education Department include a contrast of old fashioned meat and potatoes along with light and healthy menus. The hands-on classes are held at the college’s West Davenport Center, 2950 N. Fairmount St., from 6 - 9 p.m. and cost $19 each.

Grandma’s Fried Chicken Dinner will bring back memories of days gone by with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed corn and individual peach cobblers. Class will be held July 23, course number 138262.

Light Treats are some wonderful desserts for hot summer days that won’t weigh you down. Class will be held July 29, course number 138264.

Individual Meatloaf Dinner allows participants to have it their way with several different ingredients from which to choose. There will also be beer dip for an appetizer, buttered potatoes, a vegetable and mom’s apple crisp. Class will be held July 30, course number 138256.

Pork Chops in Gravy Dinner begins with browning the chops and letting them simmer in gravy while preparing mashed potatoes, a vegetable and deep dish peach pie. Class will be held August 6, course number 138246.

Full Fat Versus Half Fat compares full fat and reduced fat options for several popular foods including chicken parmesan, fettuccini alfredo, brownies and chocolate mousse. Participants will taste test for themselves and also learn simple swaps and substitutions, as well as healthier methods for food preparation. Bring containers for leftovers. Class will be held August 11, course number 138107.

Also coming in August is the college’s Farmers/Gourmet Markets trip to Chicagoon August 5. The chartered bus trip begins the day at a farmers market and progresses to some of Chicago’s best gourmet shops. Participants should bring a cell phone and a cooler with ice for taking all of their great purchases home.

The bus departs at 7 a.m. from the Kimberly Center for Alternative Education, 1002 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport, returning at approximately 8:30 p.m.  The cost is $79 and the course number is 137954.
