MCC Music Department: New York State of Mind
KY COCHRAN/MUSCATINE JOURNAL
The MCC Concert Choir took New York by storm, literally. Traveling to and from their Carnegie Hall debut February 13-17 the MCC choir ran into weather related airline delays. However, once the choir arrived in New York it was smooth sailing. The choir rehearsed for three days under the direction of Iowa native Peter Eklund before taking the stage on Sunday evening in the historic New York venue.
The MCC Concert Choir joined with over 120 singers from two year colleges in Warwick,
Rhode Island; Bronxville, New York; Palatine, Illinois; Devils Lake, North Dakota;
and Fergus Falls, Minneapolis. The students were also able to take advantage of opportunities
to sight see and take in shows. This was the first visit to New York for each of
the 19 MCC singers and the one thing they each agree on is that they hope it is not
their last visit.
The MCC Concert Choir will present the music they performed in New York on Friday, March 7th at 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church located at 6th and Sycamore. The MCC Variety Singers will add some New York flavor to the concert with “New York, New York” made famous by Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow’s “New York City Rhythm” and Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind”. The MCC music department is pleased to have special guests, the Heartland Harmony Barbershop Chorus join them for this evening of music. Admission is by donation.
