Eastern Iowa Community Colleges’ paramedic and emergency medical technician (EMT) students now have the opportunity to practice techniques inside an actual ambulance thanks to a generous donation from MEDIC EMS.
MEDIC EMS, the 911 ambulance service for Davenport, Bettendorf, and northern Scott County, and the Iowa Emergency Medical Service Association Ambulance Service of the year for 2011 has donated an ambulance to EICC to help train students in the EMT program.
“This provides a great benefit for our students,” said Mary Briones, EICC EMS Program Director. “It’s a tremendous advantage in their training for them to be able to simulate emergency practices beyond the classroom and inside an ambulance.”
Briones said students use the college’s state-of-the-art computerized mannequin to simulate a wide array of injuries and physical conditions. The ambulance allows them to take that training outside the classroom setting into a more “live” situation.
Instructors will teach on-the-scene situations by taking the mannequin outside, simulating an accident and allowing the students to treat the patient (mannequin), load it onto the ambulance and then continue to provide treatment as they drive to the hospital.
Being able to provide the treatment inside the ambulance takes the students’ education a step further making it as close as possible to simulating the actual situation.
MEDIC EMS has partnered with EICC for more than 20 years.
“MEDIC EMS plays a key role in the lives of our EMT & Paramedic students, through preceptor education, as they acquire the knowledge & skills to perform the job of an EMS provider in our community,” Briones said. “We value MEDIC EMS & their dedication to the EMS profession & their contribution to the success of our students.”
EICC Chancellor Dr. Don Doucette pointed out that partnerships with local business and industry were an important piece in helping students to be successful.
“The support of businesses such as MEDIC EMS is vital to our students,” he said. “We can’t thank them enough for their contributions. The close relationships we have developed with many area businesses help to insure that our students are properly trained and ready to perform once they leave our classrooms.”
EICC provides programs in Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic. Courses are provided for both those currently employed in the field as well as those working to become an EMT.
