bachelor’s degree with Iowa Wesleyan College through classes offered
on the MCC campus.

A 25-year higher education partnership was celebrated Tuesday afternoon at Muscatine Community College (MCC), one of the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges.

In what was a unique agreement at the time, MCC partnered with Iowa Wesleyan College in 1987 to offer a bachelor’s degree program on the Muscatine campus. That partnership has remained strong throughout the years and continues today, making it possible for area students to earn their four-year degree close to home.

“Iowa Wesleyan College’s presence on our campus provides a great opportunity for students,” said MCC President Bob Allbee. “For many students, the distance to a four-year college makes it very difficult for them to continue their education once they graduate from MCC. The ability for them to earn their bachelor’s degree here on our campus breaks down that big barrier to a bachelor’s degree.”

The Iowa Wesleyan agreement allows MCC students to transfer to Iowa Wesleyan and complete bachelor’s degrees in elementary education, business, accounting, nursing and human services. It includes the use of classrooms and instructional support materials, coordinated course scheduling (including shared courses on occasion), transfer course equivalencies and articulation and, more recently, reciprocal course credit agreements.

In addition to Allbee, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges Chancellor Dr. Don Doucette was also present during a reception noting the silver anniversary of the colleges’ partnership. Iowa Wesleyan College President Dr. Jay Simmons and many representatives of the college were also at the college to note the occasion.

“Our long and cooperative relationship with Muscatine Community College remains a model of cooperation between public and private institutions,” said Dr. Simmons. “Our partnership has provided a mutual benefit for residents of greater southeastern and eastern Iowa in that these programs have achieved successful outcomes for Muscatine Community College, Iowa Wesleyan College and, most importantly, the students whom we have served.”

Allbee said the partnership with Iowa Wesleyan is part of an overall commitment to help MCC students succeed and to be able to take the next steps in their lives.  He said the agreement is one of the ways in which the college helps its students reach their ultimate goals, whether that be a four-year degree or entrance directly into the job market.
