From Basic Cooking classes to the Farmers Market in June
Whether it’s learning the basics of cooking, throwing together a summer salad or taking a trip to Chicago’s farmers and ethnic markets, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges has that and much more.
The college’s Continuing Education department is offering a number of short, hands-on classes in June. Classes will be held in EICC’s new West Davenport Center, 2950 North Fairmount St., Davenport.
Cooking Basics demonstrates how to braise, fry, poach and grill proteins. The class will be held June 12 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The cost is $19 and the course number is 108785.
Summer Salads & Marinades II was a popular class a year ago so it’s being brought back but with new salads and marinades this time around. On the menu this time are the old Boarshead Restaurant’s Falstaff Marinade, a Caesar Pasta Salad, Maytag Blue Cheese Dressing as well as some chicken and pork marinades, and other summer salads.
Students can choose from two different dates and times. The first session will be held June 13 from 1 – 4 p.m. The course number is 108789. The second session will be held June 20 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The course number is 108822. The cost for either session is $19.
Summer Sorbets and Ice Cream is the perfect summer time class, showing how to make sorbets and ice creams at home. Participants will play with flavor profiles and also learn to use and purchase gourmet frozen fruit purees. The class will be held June 14, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The cost is $19 and the course number is 108779.
Butter Cream Basics guides students through the making of buttercream and three types of buttercream frosting include Chocolate French, Vanilla Italian and Strawberry Swiss. The class will be held June 26, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The cost is $19 and the course number is 108781.
Finally, the college is hosting a Farmers and Ethnic Markets culinary bus trip to Chicago. The trip includes the Farmers Market, some Asian and African stores, and even includes a stop at Trader Joe’s. Participants should wear their walking shoes and bring totes. The bus will be equipped with coolers. It departs at 7 a.m. on June 19, returning at approximately 8:30 p.m., from the Kimberly Center for Alternative Education, 1002 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport. Cost of the trip is $74 and the course number is 108424.
