This year’s Convention theme - "Be a Star" - set the stage for three exciting days devoted to enhancing students Phi Theta Kappa Experience. Yale Law School Professor Amy Chua, a respected writer on global politics and economics and author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, addressed the college completion agenda and the 2012/2013 Honors Study Topic, The Culture of Competition, from the perspective of such diverse topics as the rise and fall of hyper powers, globalization and parenting. Another featured speaker was Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point and Outlier, is known for interpreting new ideas and presenting them in a context to promote success. Gladwell also addressed aspects of the new Honors Study Topic, The Culture of Competition.

In addition to large seminars, students attended smaller educational forums that included topics such as: Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Opportunities, Building a Better Team, Career Advice - Resume & Interview Tips, Critical Thinking, Guiding Through Conflict, Emotional Intelligence, and  30 other topics.  Students came back from Convention excited to share what they learned with the rest of their Chapter and start applying that knowledge to the community service projects already in progress as well as a long list of potential projects in the future.

A special project that Phi Theta Kappa close to the hearts of the members is the March of Dimes walk.  PTK Vice-President Amanda Sullivan, and her family, are the ambassadors for this year’s “March for Babies –Clinton” for The March of Dimes. The group has been inspired by the Sullivan family and would like to collect funds to help this organization.  PTK members and advisors are walking and volunteering for her team at the walk in Clinton on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Riverview Park Bandshell at 9AM.

Anyone interested in walking may join the group.  Donations can be given to PTK Advisor Gina Bielski at CCC.  Bielski commented, “We are so proud of all of our PTK members and officers, and Amanda has served PTK and CCC well.  She recently gave a presentation about her experience at our Commit to Complete Ceremony, and was just recognized this year as a student leader.”  Visit the web site to meet the Sullivan Family.  For more information about the March of Dimes, please visit www.marchofdimes.com.

The members of the Clinton Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa have supported other organizations including The Children’s Cancer Connection.
