The Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) is a project funded by the Chancellor's Initiative IDEAS team. There are lots of different definitions for "sustainability," but one of the simplest comes from the United Nations:
Meeting "the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
This definition considers that while development may be essential to satisfy human needs and improve quality of life, it should occur in such a way that the capacity of the natural environment to meet present and future needs is not compromised.
The SCI project's main goal is to explore the possibility of adopting a District-wide sustainability policy in 2008, involving students, staff, faculty, administration, and community. To see the PowerPoint presented to the EICCD Board in November 2007, please click here. The three major project outcomes that will help achieve this goal are to:
- Develop and submit a proposal to adopt and implement a District sustainability policy, including:
- Needs analysis
- Cost-benefit analysis
- Feasibility study
- Proposal development and submittal
- Promote awareness of the need for sustainability in District day-to-day operations and processes, including:
- Four targeted, high-visibility projects
- Stormwater mitigation (SCC)
- Energy audit (MCC)
- Waste stream audit (CCC)
- Energy-efficient building planning (CCC)
- Feasibility study for integration of sustainability concepts across the curriculum
- Four targeted, high-visibility projects
- Promote awareness and involvement with current and future District sustainability efforts, including:
- Consolidate information online, in a user-friendly "one-stop shop" area, to disseminate information on District groups, clubs, committees, individuals, and their sustainability activities
- Encourage partnering and pooling of resources for maximum results

Throughout 2007, we'll be asking for much-needed input and volunteers for help with the Initiative. For questions, comments, and suggestions, please feel free to contact one of the members of the SCI's pro tem planning group:
