Carver Charitable Trust grants $600,000 endowment to MCC scholarship fund
The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Board of Trustees has approved a grant of $600,000 to the Muscatine Community College Foundation. Proceeds shall be used to provide annual financial scholarship support for deserving students enrolled in approved degree programs at Muscatine Community College.
The grant was made to honor the meritorious service provided to the Board by the late William F. Cory (1919-2007). Cory was a strong advocate of the MCC nursing program.
According to Billie DeKeyrel, MCC Foundation Scholarship Coordinator, a request for $10,000 in 1992, was granted to award scholarships to nontraditional students. In 2000 the Trust increased that amount to $15,000. The additional $5,000 was to be awarded to education majors.
Nursing instructor Ellie Sweet and Billie DeKeyrel worked closely with the Trust in 2000 and identified the need for scholarships for nursing students transferring to SCC to complete the ADN program. In 2001 they added $10,000 to our grant to award to these SCC students and increased that amount to $15,000 in 2005.
The $30,000 yearly grant for the above-named scholarships, has been replaced with the $600,000 endowed fund.
