New members inducted into honors society at Clinton Community College

Clinton Community College recently inducted 15 new members into the Alpha Theta Beta Chapter of International Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community college students.

Phi Theta Kappa was established in Missouri in 1918 by the presidents of the two-year colleges and became recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges in 1929 as the official honor society for two-year colleges. Today, PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,100 chapters located in the 50 United States, US territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan.

Membership is by invitation only. Students are required to have a 3.5 grade point average and completed a minimum of 12 hours before they receive an invitation to join.

The Phi Theta Kappa induction keynote speaker was Gary Metivier of KWQC. Metivier has won a number of awards from both the Iowa and Illinois Associated Press and IBNA. Included in those awards: Best Newswriter, Best Series, Best Agriculture reporting and Best Political reporting.

"I just love telling people stories," Metivier said.

He is also the author of a new book “Willie’s Wagon”, a book, Metivier said, “for children who at times are too sick to be in school, but are always in our hearts. It is also for those who help give them a smile when they need it most.”

Metivier and the Alpha Theta Beta Chapter of PTK share an interest in the Heart Connection Summer Cancer Camp, a camp for kids with cancer. Both Metivier and members of the PTK chapter have volunteered at the camp.

“It was an awesome experience to work with these children," PTK chapter president Wendy Lind said. "For these kids, being with others that have the same issues helps them deal with their own.”
