Students to participate in Iowa New Readers Conference
The Clinton Community College Adult Basic Education department will send three students to the 2008 New Readers Conference, April 12th, in Des Moines. Attending will be two students from Clinton and Darrel Ryner of Dewitt. This will be Ryner’s third conference. Literacy Coordinator, Sydney Kurtz, will accompany the students.
Previous New Readers Conferences have covered health care issues, primarily prescriptions, instructions on dosages and side effects that are more reader friendly. Nurses and doctors were on hand to help readers decipher their prescriptions. Several years ago Mr. Ryner had the honor of meeting the keynote speaker who was then Secretary of State, Governor Chet Culver.
At the conference, a dedicated group of new readers gathers, compiles and presents various programs for other new readers who come from all over the state of Iowa and other surrounding states This is an opportunity for students to share thoughts, concerns and maybe a laugh or two with their peers.
