Special workshop focuess on meth information and awareness

Clinton Community College will be the site for a special program “Meth & More – Information and Awareness for Home Care Providers” on Friday, April 11.  The event will take place from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Graphic Arts Technology Center (GATC), 1951 Manufacturing Drive, Clinton. 

The purpose of the program is to help service providers identify harmful substances within the home, support services and community interventions available to Drug Endangered Children (DEC) and their families.  Participants will:

  • Increase knowledge of Drug Endangered Children (DEC) locally, statewide, and nationally.
  • Learn the characteristics of substance abuse caregivers and the illegal substances they may be using.
  • Increase knowledge of the environments of drug endangered children and their families
  • Increase awareness of the Child Protection System; locally, statewide and nationally.

The speakers of the “Meth & More” panel are experts in their fields.  

  • Officer Michael Adney – Police officer for five years, currently assigned to the Street Crimes Unit, Adney is a certified defensive tactics instructor and a certified Standardized Field Sobriety Test instructor.  He has been awarded many honors in the Military Police U.S. Army Reserve.  He is a member of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association, and a member of the Gateway Area H.E.A.T. a tactical entry team. 

  • Brent Andresen – Social Work Supervisor with the Iowa Department of Human Services, Clinton and Jackson Counties.   His 18 years work experience with DHS includes experience as a Social Worker for child protective cases, a child abuse investigator/assessment worker, Human Services Area Administrator, and Supervisor of child protection workers in Clinton and Jackson Counties.

  • Detective Steve Cundiff – Detective with the Clinton County sheriff’s Office for the last seven years,  working general criminal cases in Clinton County.  Cundiff worked with drug agents from the Blackhawk Area Taskforce 1991-2000, an area that covers counties in Eastern Iowa and Northwestern Illinois. 

  • Sgt. Ron J. Heeren – Police Officer for 21 years, Sgt. Heeren has worked in narcotic enforcement for 12 years and is currently assigned to a DEA task force as a task force officer.  He is a certified Clandestine Lab investigator (meth labs), certified DRE (drug recognition expert), certified DRE instructor, and a gang crime specialist. 

  • Kristin Huisenga – Certified Prevention Specialist at the Clinton Substance Abuse Council for 2½ years, her responsibilities include facilitating the Meth Reduction project & Clinton County Drug Endangered Children Alliance through community prevention efforts to reduce drug use and increase community awareness and collaboration.

  • Officer Casey Newmarch – Police Officer for 5 years currently assigned to the Street Crimes Unit.  Newmarch is a certified Clandestine Lab investigator, traffic accident investigator and received additional training through Midwest Counterdrug. 

  • Cheryl Newport – Assistant Clinton County Attorney.  Prior to this position, Newport was in private practice in Scott County for eleven years.  Her primary areas of practice were juvenile matters and appellate work.  Currently she prosecutes all juvenile delinquency matters, all children in need of assistance petitions, all mental health and substance abuse commitments for juveniles and school truancy mediations. 

  • Maudi M. Walton – Certified Prevention Specialist at New Directions/Area Substance Abuse Council.  She is in daily contact with children, and she facilitates programs in the Clinton School District.  Walton is a CASA volunteer for the 7th Judicial District.

Sponsors of the program are the Iowa Alliance for Drug Endangered Children, Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency, and Clinton Community College.  Web sites of interest are Iowa Alliance for Drug Endangered Children  and National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children

 There is a $10 fee for those taking the course for CEUs/CEHs.  Class numbers are:

#52773 for CEUs/CEHs - $10 fee to CCC
.25 CEUs for Nurses
2.5 CEHs for Social Workers

#52775 No CEUs/CEHs awarded – no charge
