Maquoketa Continuing Education classes offer variety of choices

Live Well, Be Well – If you live with a long-term illness such as asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, or diabetes, you are not alone. If you or someone you love lives with a long-term health condition, here is your chance to learn how to more effectively manage it.
Subjects covered include: 1) dealing with frustration, fatigue, pain or isolation, 2) improving and maintaining strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medication, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and 6) how to evaluate new treatments. Isn’t it time to live an active and fulfilling life?
This class will be held at the YMCA Community Room, 500 East Summit, Maquoketa. Register for course # 52313 by calling 563-244-7100. The cost is $30. The class will be held on Mondays, March 31 – May 12; 10 a.m. – Noon.
Stair Step Basket – This is a large market type basket woven with two levels so that it can sit on two stair steps. It is a great basket for those of us who place things on the steps to be taken upstairs later. A large 20” oak “D” style handle is used to make this sturdy basket. Dyed reeds will be available to use in designing your basket. Prior weaving experience is recommended for this basket to finish in the allotted time.

The class will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 6 – 10 p.m. Material fee of $25 is payable to the instructor at the first class. Please bring the following supplies: scissors, pencil, pinch clothes pins, tape measure, old towel, spray bottle for water, flathead screwdriver and needle nose pliers.
Beginning Computers – Especially for Seniors – Are you just beginning to use computers? This class is for you! Learn the basics to operate this machine that is fast becoming a necessity in today’s modern life. Become familiar with terminology. Get a taste of Windows XP, the database and the Internet, through hands-on experience in the computer lab. Book included in fee.
This class will be held at the Maquoketa High School, Maquoketa. Register for course # 52300 by calling 563-652-5000. The cost is $49. The class will be held on Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m. – Noon.
Word – Level 2 – Word processing is the use of computers to create, revise, and save documents for printing and future retrieval. The prerequisite for this course is Word Level 1. In this course you will increase the complexity of your Word documents by learning to use customized lists, tables, charts, graphics and perform mail merges.

Excel – Level 1 – The prerequisite for this class is Windows Level 1 or equivalent knowledge. You have used paper based systems to store data that you run calculations on. You now want to migrate that data to an electronic format. In this course, you will learn to create a basic worksheet, modify a worksheet, perform calculations, format a worksheet, develop a workbook and print the contents of a workbook.

Excel – Level 2 – The prerequisite for this class is Excel Level 1. In this course, you will learn how to create and apply templates, create and modify charts, work with graphic objects, calculate with advanced formulas and sort and filter data.
