You Don’t Have to Be a Star to Dance Like One
Whether you’ve admired the fancy footwork on Dancing With the Stars or were stunned by a sibling’s samba at your cousin’s wedding, now is the time to get off the couch and onto the dance floor. Clinton Community College Maquoketa Center is joining forces with dance instructors Dennis and Sandy Scheckel of DeWitt to bring the basics of Ballroom, Latin, and Swing Dance to Maquoketa.
Dancing is a great way to spend time with someone you care about as well as meet new people. It’s also a great way for couples to reconnect once the kids have left home.
“It gives couples a chance to hold each other,” said Scheckel, “and rekindle their love of music, dance and each other.”
Many younger couples find the Latin and Swing dances to be an invigorating workout for mind, body and spirit. From the tantalizing tango to the jitterbug and jive, these dances require practice, precision and passion along with strength, flexibility and endurance.
Beginning Ballroom includes beginning steps in Foxtrot, Waltz, and Swing. For something a little spicier, try Beginning Latin and Swing classes. Beginning level steps will be taught, using a variety of Swing and Latin tempos. These dance steps allow you to enjoy today’s popular music, as well as some of the nostalgic sounds of the Big Band Era.
Both classes will be held at Cardinal Elementary School gym at 1003 Pershing in Maquoketa. Classes begin Tuesday, March 4 and run through April 15 with no classes held on March 18. Beginning Ballroom runs from 6:30 -7:30 p.m. and Beginning Latin & Swing will be held from 7:30 - 8:30pm. The cost is $40 per person per class.
Gain the confidence you need to waltz your way through any wedding reception, cha cha through a charity event, foxtrot through a father-daughter dance, or rumba through a high school reunion.
