EMT-Basic
EMS:218 (FORMERLY EM:105) 7.5 credits
130 clock hours
Course
Description: This is a 16-week program that includes
theory, practical lab, clinical, and field internship. It consists
of eight modules of instruction; preparatory, airway, patient
assessment, medical/behavioral & OB/GYN emergencies, trauma,
infants/children, operations, and Iowa supplemental curriculum.
The student will also complete a competency based clinical and
field rotation during the program. This course is based on the
United States Department of Transportation Guidelines and the
National Standard Curriculum for EMS Education which is the
foundation of knowledge and skills of the EMT-Basic.
Upon successful completion of the program, the student is
eligible for the National Registry of Emergency Medical
Technicians, EMT-Basic practical and written examinations. Upon
successful completion of the National Registry examinations, the
student will also receive a State of Iowa, EMT-Basic
certification.
Prerequisites:
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must be physically able to perform the skills required of EMS
personnel.
- Must be 18 years of age at the time of enrollment.
- Must possess a current American Heart Association, Healthcare
Provider or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer CPR card which
validates training in obstructed airway, AED and CPR for adults,
children, and infants.

EMT-Intermediate/85
EMS:311 (FORMERLY EM:121) 4 credits
60 clock hours
Course Description: This is an eight-week program
that includes theory, practical lab, clinical, and field
internship. It consists of four modules of instruction;
preparatory, patient assessment, fluid resuscitation, and
assessment based management.
The student will also complete a competency based clinical and
field rotation during the program. This course is based on the
United States Department of Transportation Guidelines and the
National Standard Curriculum for EMS Education which is the
foundation of knowledge and skills of the EMT-Intermediate/85.
Upon successful completion of the program, the student is
eligible for the National Registry of Emergency Medical
Technicians, EMT-Intermediate/85 practical and written
examinations. Upon successful completion of the National Registry
examinations, the student will also receive a State of Iowa,
EMT-Intermediate/85 certification.

- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of
enrollment.

EMT-Intermediate/99 (IOWA
PARAMEDIC)
EMS:405 (FORMERLY EM:201) 15 credits

Course Description: This is a 35-week program
that includes theory, practical lab, clinical, and field
internship. It consists of seven modules of instruction;
preparatory, airway, patient assessment, trauma, medical, special
considerations, and assessment based management.
The student will also complete a competency based clinical and
field rotation during the program. This course is based on the
United States Department of Transportation Guidelines and the
National Standard Curriculum for EMS Education which is the
foundation of knowledge and skills of the EMT-Intermediate/99.
Upon successful completion of the program, the student is
eligible for the National Registry of Emergency Medical
Technicians, EMT-Intermediate/99 practical and written
examinations. Upon successful completion of the National Registry
examinations, the student will also receive a State of Iowa,
EMT-Iowa Paramedic certification.
Prerequisites:

Advanced Cardiac Life Support
(ACLS)
EMS:810 (FORMERLY EM:215)
16.5 clock hours, 1 credit
Course Description: This intensive
certification course is presented utilizing the American Heart
Association Standards and Guidelines for the Advanced Cardiac Life
Support provider. This course is designed to expand the students'
knowledge of Emergency Cardiovascular Care for the adult patient,
and to formulate the correct
treatment plan for given patient simulations.
Upon successful course completion, the student will receive an
American Heart Association ACLS Provider certification card.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program
(NRP)
EMS:818 (FORMERLY EM:219)
16.5 clock hours, 1 credit
Course Description: The Neonatal Resuscitation
Program course is a certification program that utilizes the
Standards and Guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and
the American Heart Association.
This program is designed to be an intensive program where
participants learn an evidence-based approach in resuscitation of
the neonate. The causes, prevention, and management of mild to
severe neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health
care professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skill in
newborn resuscitation.
Upon successful course completion, the student will receive an
American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association NRP
Provider certification card.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support
(PALS)
EMS:815 (FORMERLY EM:216)
16.5 clock hours, 1 credit
Course Description: This intensive certification
course is presented utilizing the American Academy of Pediatrics
and the American Heart Association Standards and
Guidelines for the Pediatric Advanced Life Support provider.
This course is designed to expand the students' knowledge of
Emergency Cardiovascular Care for the pediatric patient, and to
formulate the correct treatment plan for given patient simulations.
Upon successful course completion, the student will receive an
American Heart Association PALS Provider certification card.

Pediatric Education Pre-Hospital
Professionals (PEPP)
EMS:816 (FORMERLY EM:218)
16.5 clock hours, 1 credit
Course Description: This intensive certification
course is designed to expand the students' knowledge of Cardiac and
Trauma Emergency Care for the pediatric patient, and is presented
utilizing the American Academy of Pediatrics as a complete source
of pre-hospital medical information for the emergent care of
infants and
children. Upon successful course completion, the student will
receive an American Academy of Pediatrics Provider certification
card.

Pre-Hospital Trauma Life SUpport
(PHTLS)
EMS:820 (FORMERLY EM:217)
16.5 clock hours, 1 credit
Course Description: The Pre-Hospital Trauma Life
Support course is presented utilizing the Standards and Guidelines
for Emergency Trauma Care under the direction of the American
College of Surgeons. This intensive hands-on program is a unique
educational opportunity that was created in recognition for the
real need in EMS education for additional training in the care of
the trauma patient.
This program is designed to enhance and increase knowledge and
skills necessary in delivering critical care in the pre-hospital
environment. Upon successful course completion, the student will
receive an American College of Surgeons PHTLS Provider
certification card.

Note: The Paramedic Specialist Program will articulate for
college credit toward the AAS Degree in EMS.
Please note the EMT-Intermediate/85, and Intermediate/99
Programs will be offered every other year to accommodate those
wishing to obtain an AAS Degree in EMS, and on an as needed
basis.
