If you choose to continue to pursue opportunities in the Health,
Safety and Environmental Technology (HSET) field, you may want to
consider professional certification in your particular area of
expertise.
In the safety field, the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and
Associate Safety Professional (ASP) are the designations many
safety professionals carry. If you have earned an Associates
of Applied Science degree in HSET or a Baccalaureate degree in any
subject, you may meet the educational requirements for the ASP and
CSP certification process. For further information on ASP and
CSP certification, contact the Board of Certified Safety
Professionals, 217-359-9263.
In the environmental field, the Certified Hazardous Materials
Manager (CHMM) is the designation many environmental professionals
carry. All candidates for the CHMM certification must have a
Baccalaureate degree (or higher) from an accredited college or
university. The Associate of Applied Science degree in HSET
from Scott Community College meets a portion of this
requirement. For further information on the CHMM
certification, contact the Institute of Hazardous
Materials Management, 301-984-8969.
You may also consider the Occupational Health and Safety
Technologist (OHST) certification. The OHST program
established standards for individuals who otherwise may not qualify
for full-time, professional certifications, such as the CSP or
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). As an OHST candidate,
you may substitute college education for some or the entire
experience requirement.
The Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety
Technologists (CCHEST) has granted graduates of our program a
waiver of requirements toward the OHST certification. The
HSET program meets the requirement for having coverage in three of
the five subject areas. The other two areas may be covered
through earning an Associates of Applied Science degree.
Completion of the HSET program also leads to a waiver of
¾ years of experience toward the OHST certification.
For more information on the OHST certification, contact CCHEST,
217-359-2686.
