Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
Individuals who have already mastered the concepts and
principles taught in the Health, Safety and Environmental
Technology (HSET) courses may want to consider Credit for Prior
Learning (CPL). This knowledge may have been gained through
personal or professional endeavors, through hands-on experiences,
through personal study, or through courses, such as continuing
education workshops.
Please note that credit is awarded for learning the concepts and
principles taught in a specific course, not just for
experience. "Time-in-service" may have little to do with what
an individual has learned.
CPL for each course has three major components:
• The Experience Worksheet
• The Portfolio, the Proficiency Test, or a
combination of the two
• The Oral Interview (by phone or in person)
If you consider this option, it is recommended that you submit
copies of your training certificates, continuing education
certificates and any other documents you deem ncessary for
consideration of CPL. Copies should be submitted to:
Robert Majchrzak
Scott Community College
500 Belmont Road
Bettendorf, IA 52722
After the documents have been reviewed you will receive a letter
regarding what was submitted and what translates to an equivalent
HSET course.
This is an excellent option for expediting your goal of
attaining a degree at Scott Community College. However, please be
advised that many colleges and universities do not accept CPL on a
transcript as transferred credit. If you receive CPL at Scott
Community College, you may have to repeat the course or a similar
course at the college or university.
