What to expect while taking an
Online Distance Learning Course
Online distance learning is an innovative development in higher
education that uses technology to facilitate learning without the
limitations of time or place. EICCD offers courses online so that
students around the world can complete a certificate or an
Associate in Applied Science degree in HSET without stepping into a
classroom.
Student up-to-date computer technology connects to faculty
members, coursemates and advisors. One advantage of distance
learning is that it gives students the flexibility to achieve an
appropriate balance of work, family, community and educational
commitments while completing the certificate program or an
Associate in Applied Science degree.
Prospective students usually wonder what a college course will
demand in terms of time and effort. The typical HSET distance
learning course follows this format:
The student will:
- Review the chapter objectives before beginning each lesson. It
is recommended that you attempt to write out an answer or
explanation for each objective before reading the assigned
materials to help you determine what you already know and to help
you focus your studies.
- Read the assigned materials in the textbook and, using the
chapter objectives as a worksheet, verify items you may have
completed before your reading of the materials and fill in
unanswered items.
- Complete the required activities for each lesson.
- Participate in an asynchronous discussion forum.
The activities are designed to be practical, providing
experience in the world of health, safety and environmental
technology. Among the types of activities you may expect are the
following:
- Researching the Code of Federal Regulations.
- Analyzing case studies based on applicable regulations.
- Practicing the completion of government forms.
- Researching topics in a library, online, or in industry
journals.
- Interviewing health, safety and environmental technology
professionals.
- Visiting health, safety and environmental technology
facilities.
- Maintaining a student journal of health, safety and
environmental news.
- Designing employee training programs and emergency response
contingency plans.
- Writing essays or research papers.
