Program Description
The service industry is growing. More than ever before, people have disposable income that can be put toward leisure activities such as traveling and dining out.

The Hospitality Management program at Scott Community College will prepare you in nearly every aspect of this growing industry.

You'll be ready to go to work in front-line supervision/management at hotels, restaurants and clubs anywhere in the United States or in other countries, including luxury resorts or cruise ships.

Your degree in Hospitality Management will demonstrate that you have the necessary skills to perform the following job duties:

  • Analyze operational problems and establish procedures
  • Assign duties to other employees
  • Collaborate on menu planning/serving arrangements
  • Perform serving duties
  • Manage finances
  • Control inventories/monitor supplies, equipment and work areas
  • Develop departmental objectives, budgets, policies and procedures
  • Perform personnel actions
  • Purchase supplies and equipment
  • Record production and operational data
  • Carry out customer service
  • Schedule parties and take reservations
  • Train workers in food preparation, sanitation and safety

Award Options
An Associate in Applied Science Degree is awarded. This unique program is also an apprenticeship, so you'll have 4,000 hours of real, hands-on paid work experience. You'll also receive a Certified Journeyman certificate with the U.S. Department of Labor.

Job Outlook
Nationally, service industries are consistently among the top ten fastest growing job segments in the country. Locally, a need for 87 positions was discerned through a  labor market assessment conducted recently by the . More than half of those positions are projected to be full time and three-quarters of the companies responding to the survey said they have difficulty finding qualified hospitality management personnel.

Earnings
Median annual income in the United States is $29,000, with potential earnings of up to $51,400. In Iowa, median earnings are $27,200 up to $42,600 annual salary.
