Program Description
Students can take advantage of both manual machining as well as computer numerical control (CNC) machining. Certificate programs are available in both areas; the Associate in Applied Science degree program is available in CNC machining. Learning is hands-on in a modern laboratory furnished with the same types of equipment used by local manufacturing plants. Classes are offered in an eight-week format with a flexible schedule of attendance during day and evening hours (subject to sufficient enrollment)

Job Outlook
The Occupational Outlook Handbook says that there will more job openings in the next several years than there are trained workers to fill them. Greater use of computers in the manufacturing sector has led to a shortage of qualified workers. Locally, the Skills 2000 survey conducted by the Eastern Iowa Community College District indicated a coming need for more than 5,000 people in manufacturing technology, including machine operators and fabricators.
Earnings
According to The Occupational Outlook Handbook, the middle 50 percent of machinist employed by industry earned $10.39 to $11.43 an hour.
