Scott Community College's Information Technology (IT) department offers an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree with two concentration areas: Software Development (Programming) and Networking. The department also offers the CCNA CISCO Networking Certificates and a Certificate in Web Design.
Software Development: This A.A.S. degree concentration area provides the fundamentals necessary for solving business-oriented problems through the use of computer programming languages. Students obtain extensive hands-on experience writing programs using the latest software development tools specifically geared toward getting you local employment. Languages covered include Alice, C++, Java, and Visual Basic.NET. Database design and administration is also covered. A shorter term Web Design Certificate is also offered.
Networking: this A.A.S. degree concentration area provides students with strong PC troubleshooting and repair skills, desktop support, network administration, and router/switch configuration experience. Hands-on assignments with both onsite and remote equipment allow students to troubleshoot and practice on equipment they will set up and maintain in the field. Shorter options include: The department also offers part time certificate programs: CCNA Networking, A+ Preparation, Network+ Preparation, Computer Repair and Help Desk Support, Wireless LAN.
Web Design: The Certificate in Web Design will focus on the overall production processes surrounding web site design with particular emphasis on design elements involving layout, navigation and interactivity using Adobe Go Live 6.0, Adobe Live Motion 2.0, Adobe Illustrator 10 and Adobe Image Ready 7.0.
Students will learn programming related to website construction in Visual Basic, C++, Java, HMTL and VMP. They will also complete design exercises using Adobe applications, and design elements involving layouts, navigation and interactivity. It helps students prepare for career opportunities as a web designer, entry-level graphical designer, web project manager, or webmaster.
Game Development: This new degree provides the student with experience in game design through the development process into a finished, marketable game. There is a strong math and physics emphasis in this degree. Students in the Software Development or Networking concentration often take some of the beginning courses in this degree as electives to their program. A shorter term Web Game Development Certificate is also offered.
