A majority of veterinary technicians are employed in private practice, particularly companion animal practice. However, the demand for technicians in other areas is rapidly expanding.

Existing opportunities for graduates include:

  • biomedical facilities
  • diagnostic laboratories
  • colleges/universities
  • veterinary supply sales
  • zoons and wildlife facilities
  • humane societies and animal control facilities
  • the military
  • drug or feed manufacturing companies
  • industry
  • food safety inspection

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 35 percent increase in the number of veterinary technicians needed between 2004 and 2014. Nationally, the hourly median income for veterinary technicians is $12.88.
