The ground has been turned and construction is beginning on a new Clinton Community College Maquoketa Center. Representatives from Eastern Iowa Community College District and Clinton Community College conducted an official groundbreaking ceremony for the center September 19.
The center will be located directly northeast of Maquoketa High School. The building will house two computer labs, a meeting room, four classrooms and additional lab space.
Clinton Community College (CCC) has delivered a variety of services to the Maquoketa area for more than two decades. The new facility will allow it to expand those services and better meet the needs of the community.
“This building provides us a great opportunity to add college credit classes during the day,” CCC President Dr. Karen Vickers said. “It will also provide us a base of operation that will make it much easier to coordinate our activities in Maquoketa and the surrounding area.”
The college currently delivers credit classes in the evening and Saturdays, using classroom space provided by the Maquoketa Community Schools. The new building will reduce the college’s reliance on that space.
In addition to the credit classes, CCC provides adult education, continuing education and business and industry services in Maquoketa. The new center will especially make it more convenient to provide business and industry services. In the past those classes often had to be held at the business’s location. This provides businesses the option of either having those classes at their location or at the new center.
The college also has a large number of Maquoketa High School students who attend college classes while still in high school. The location of the facility directly next to the high school will allow for further expansion of those opportunities for students.
Funding for the $1.5 million center was made possible through a 2007 bond referendum passed by the Eastern Iowa Community College District (EICCD), as well as a donation from the family of the late John Fagerland. Fagerland, a Maquoketa resident, was a long-time member of the EICCD Board of Trustees and it was his dream that the college have an educational facility in the community.
Kendra Beck, Fagerland’s daughter and a current member of the EICCD Board of Trustees, spoke at the groundbreaking ceremonies and presented a check to the college on behalf of the family. The meeting room in the center will be named in Fagerland’s honor.
In addition, the Maquoketa Community Schools also played a key role in making the facility possible by making the land available to EICCD for the purchase price of $1.
“This is a very exciting day for EICCD, Clinton Community College and Maquoketa,” said EICCD Chancellor Dr. Pat Keir. “We are very pleased to be able to play such an important role in the community. We can’t thank enough, the Fagerlands, the Maquoketa Community Schools and all of the citizens of Maquoketa and the surrounding area for their support in making this a reality.”
The center is expected to be completed in July of 2009, in time
for the start of fall classes.
