Program Description for Diesel Technology
Students graduating from the Diesel Technology program are among the most sought after of all of Scott Community College technology graduates. Diesel Technology is a two-year program admitting students in the Fall and Spring semester every year.
In 1995 and 2001 our program gained certification from Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Our curriculum is written to ASE standards and our graduates are prepared to pass ASE certification exams in the following seven areas: Brakes, Diesel Engines, Suspension & Steering, Drive Train, Electrical/Electronics Systems, Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, and Preventive Maintenance Inspection.
The diesel technician of today must be able to perform a wide variety of tasks. The diesel technician must be schooled and able to work on all systems of the over-the road truck. The technician should have a working knowledge of hydraulic systems, and computers. He or she must have good electrical troubleshooting skills. Graduates of this program can be found in a diverse number of employment areas such as:
- Construction companies
- Dealership technicians
- Drive train shops
- Farm agricultural repair shop
- Fleet technicians

Job Outlook for Diesel Technology
Opportunities should be very good for people who complete formal training in diesel mechanics; applicants without formal training will face competition for jobs. Employment of diesel service technicians and mechanics is expected to grow by 15 percent from 2010to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. Median annual wages of bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists, including incentive pay, were $40,850 in May 2010. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $26,550, and the top 10 percent earned more than $60,830.
