The Eastern Iowa Community College District provides a number of Short-Term Continuing Education programs. Many of these are designed for professionals, currently employed in the field. But a few are for people wishing to enter a profession.

Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers
The BCLS for Healthcare Provider course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign body airway obstruction, for both conscious and unconscious victims. This course is intended for participants who work in a healthcare setting and those who are required to take a healthcare provider course for their employment. This course is also the pre-requisite for anyone intending to become a BCLS Instructor.

Child Development Associate (CDA)
If you are a childcare provider or want to become one, you owe it to your clients and yourself to provide the best care possible. Earning your CDA credential shows clients that you have the knowledge and skills you need to meet the specific needs of newborns through five-year-olds.
 
A CDA is a caregiver with demonstrated ability to nurture the physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth of children in a child development framework. Today more than 40,000 CDAs work in a variety of childcare settings, including Head Start, churches, pre-school programs, family daycare homes and home visitor services.
 
College credit is available through an articulation agreement with Scott, Clinton, Muscatine Community Colleges. Students who have successfully completed the Child Development Associate credential through the Eastern Iowa Community College District, Continuing Education Division, may be eligible to receive up to 17 hours of college credit towards a degree upon completion of 12 hours in the approved degree sequence of credits at Scott, Clinton, Muscatine Community Colleges.

CPR - Heartsaver
The Heartsaver CPR program is designed to teach CPR skills of all ages and includes the relief of a conscious victim's foreign body airway obstruction. This course is for childcare providers, family members or the public. Participants will receive a credentialed course completion card, documenting the completion of the CPR course.
 
Participants will learn the American Heart Association standards for handling obstructed airways and resuscitation techniques of an adult including the use of masks.

Dietary Manager Program (DMA)
To fulfill the requirements to be eligible to become a Dietary Manager, the candidate must complete the Foodservice Supervisor coursework plus Nutrition Care Planning and Foodservice Organization Recordkeeping and the concurrent 150-hour field experience under the supervision of preceptor.
 
Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to take the Dietary Managers Association credentialing exam to become a Certified Dietary Manager.

Dietary Supervisor
This program includes the following classes:

This program satisfies the requirements for Foodservice Supervisors in a Health Care Facility. (Most of the students are already employed in foodservice)

Homemaker Home Health Aide
Home Care Aides provide in-home care services to the elderly, families with children, chronically ill patients, convalescents and those who are handicapped. They are trained to help take care of the home and family and teach sound hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention and good health practices.
 
Participants with Certified Nurse Aide, RN, LPN or other training may not need to attend the total program.
 
If the students do not get a passing score they can take a make-up test on the parts they failed.

IV Therapy for LPNs
This is a 45 hour class designed to prepare the LPN to perform procedures related to the scope of expanded scope of IV therapy.
 
You need to hold a current, unrestricted Iowa lisence to practice as a licensed practical nurse; Has worked one full year as an LPN (2080 documented hours); Be employed in a licensed hospital, lisenced skilled nursing facility or certified end-stage renal dialysis unit, whose ploicies allow the LPN to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of practice; Achieve a score of 90% on the math pretest.

Medication Aide
This class prepares students to administer non-parenteral (non-injectible) medications in long term care facilities.

   aide registry.
Dot image  Must have worked a minimum of six months 
 in the facility.
Dot image  Must be recommended by the health care
 facility administrator.

 

 

 

 

Many long term care nursing facilities in the area are utilizing medication aides.

Nurse Aide
This class prepares students to work in a nursing facility. Emphasis is placed on students achieving a basic knowledge and demonstrating skills to provide safe, effective resident care.
 
There is currently a shortage of nurse aides in the job market. Many long term care nursing facilities in the area are hiring.

Operating Room Principles and Practice
This course is designed to prepare nurses with entry level knowledge and skills to work in a perioperative environment, specifically the operating room.
 
You will need a current, unrestricted Iowa nursing lisence; evidence of immunity to rubella, PPD within the last 4 years, Mantoux TB test, Hepatitis B and free of communicable disease.

Radiography - Limited Practice
This 100 hour class is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to safely administer "limited" diagnostic radiographs in medical offices.
 
Must be employed in a facility where x-rays are administered. Healthcare professional status is highly recommended. Persons without this requirement will need permission from the instructor in order to take this class.
