Project Description  
The Eastern Iowa Community College District (EICCD) is entering into partnership with: Iowa-Illinois International Trade Association; Davenport Chamber Of Commerce; Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Eastern Iowa Sub Center; SBDC State Office; and Community College for International Development (CCID) to promote the development of international trade activities.

The project will focus activity upon developing a trade relationship with India. It will utilize the success of the activities to highlight and promote the participation of small and medium-sized companies in a broad range of international marketing activities.

Key components of the project include developing four technician-level international business classes, customized assistance to 15 core project companies, development of two videos and an escorted selling trip to India. EICCD will take advantage of a rich history of staff and institutional involvement with government, education and business in India to ensure the success of this project.

Project Objectives 
1. Enhance International Business Education Programs 
    including credit and non-credit offerings.

2. Expand the capacity of the business community to
    engage in international business activities.

3. Provide for connecting activities between college
    business education programs and the international
    activities of the business community.

4. Disseminate and build upon project activities and
    outcomes to sustain U.S. - India trading
    relationships.

Trade Mission
In November 1996, the EICCD and the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) hosted a trade mission to India. Six companies participated directly in the Trade Mission and 15 others were represented by EICCD and IDED personnel.
 
The participating companies were:

 Dot image Diamond V Mills Inc. - Cedar Rapids, Iowa
 
The Trade Mission visited four major cities (Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi) and met with more than 100 representatives from Indian government and business interests.

Trade Courses 
BU:171 Basics Of Exporting (1 cr.)
The global market place is here to stay and cultural differences play a major role in the effectiveness of your communications and business negotiations. In this course you will learn the concepts of cultural awareness most relevant to international trade. You will learn the costs, benefits and asks of exporting and obtain a working knowledge of the export process from start to finish. This is the first of a series of four international business courses.
  
BU:172 International Market Research (1 cr.)
International marketing research examines a very specific portion of the international marketing field: how to find potential customers, and how to measure the market potential of your product in other countries around the world. Sources of foreign country information and a basic (export) marketing research plan outline are included, and the U.S. company is examined for its ability to sell and service in the international arena. This is the second in a series of four international business offerings.
  
BU:173 International Shipping and Documentation (1 cr.)
This is designed to cover the details of freight forwarding and how those details impact shipping and documentation. You will be introduced to common export documents, standard forms of packaging and containerization, preparation of shipping and export documents. The responsibilities of the exporter under internationally recognized trade terms will also be covered. This is the third in a series of international business courses.
  
BU:174 International Insurance and Finance (1 cr.)
In this course you will learn to manage the risks involved when goods cross international boundaries, the terms and basic procedures for letters of credit, how to choose the appropriate methods of financing and payment for your product(s), how to obtain the foreign buyer's credit history, and finally, how to get paid. This is the fourth in a series of international business offerings.
