Scott Community College cuts ribbon on new entrance

A project that has been in the works for more than a decade has finally come to fruition as Scott Community College opened its new Highway 67 entrance.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held August 5 to celebrate the occasion. Speaking at the event were:

  • Scott Community College President Dr. Tom Coley
  • Chancellor Dr. Pat Keir
  • Congressman Bruce Braley’s District Director Pete DeKock

Funding for the $2.2 million project was made available through a 2007 bond referendum approved by the voters of the Eastern Iowa Community College District (EICC) and a $490,000 grant from the US Department of Transportation.

Funding from the $33 million bond referendum is being used for projects throughout EICC’s area. Among those projects; a new educational center was officially opened in Maquoketa on Monday, new science wings will be opened at Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges later this fall, work as begun on renovating and adding to the Applied Technology Center at Scott Community College, and Muscatine Community College recently broke ground in Wilton in a partnership that will bring a new library, community center and college satellite center to that community.

“We especially want to thank the voters of our district for approving the referendum and Congressman Bruce Braley for his work in acquiring the DOT grant for us,” Chancellor Keir said. “A new entrance to the college is something that has been talked about and hoped for, for many years, but it wasn’t possible until this funding became available.”

Prior to adding this new entrance, there was only one entrance and exit to the college, off Belmont Road. That created a great deal of congestion at particularly busy times during the day.
