Energy Efficiency

Learn about energy efficiency improvements that can be made to older homes in order to reduce the home’s energy consumption, thereby reducing greenhouse emissions and carbon footprints and improving the quality and livability of local housing.

There are almost 130 million homes in this country that combined, generate more than 20% of our nation’s carbon dioxide emissions, making them a significant contributor to global climate change.

Existing techniques and technologies in energy efficiency retrofitting can reduce home energy use by up to 40% per home and lower associated greenhouse gas emissions by up to 160 million metric tons annually by the year 2020.

Home energy retrofits have the potential to reduce home energy bills by $21 billion annually, paying for themselves over time.

Quad City Home Builders and Remodelers Association studied Scott County and found four types of homes (ranch, split foyer, and slab) that generate more emissions than average.

Older homes are in need of retrofit insulation, siding, HVAC, windows, doors, and lighting improvements as well as:

  • Residential energy audits
  • Upgrades to Energy Star® appliances
  • Weatherization

Residents living in older, ranch, split foyer, and slab homes are encouraged to participate. Workshops are open to the public.

The goal of this website is to encourage Scott County residents to complete one or more of the following retrofit projects:

  • Insulation
  • Siding
  • Heating
  • Ventilation
  • Air conditioning
  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Lighting
