The ACT Center housed at the Eastern Iowa John T. Blong Technology Center provides state-of-the-art testing and training services for lifelong learning for the community, individuals, businesses and organizations.

ACT is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides more than a hundred assessment, research, information and program management services in the areas of education planning, career planning and workforce development. As a leader in educational assessment for the past 40 years, they are best known for college entrance exams.

ACT Center services include:
	Skill-specific training and development.
	Workplace skills assessments.
	Continuing education courses in a variety of areas.
	Computer-delivered certification and licensure
	tests for the trades and professions.
	Distance learning using the latest technology.

ACT Centers have access to an extensive electronic library of instructional software that focuses on popular topics.

Also available are ACT's computerized Work Keys ® assessments that offer employers a reliable, meaningful way to identify workers who have the skills required for specific jobs.

A survey by the American Management Association (AMA) shows that 36% of job applicants tested by major U.S. firms in 1998 lacked sufficient reading and math skills for the jobs they sought. This figure had nearly doubled in two years, up from 19% in 1996.

The AMA report says that the sharp increase in skill deficiencies is not evidence of a "dumbing down" of the workforce. Rather, it confirms that higher skill levels are required for today's jobs, in a workplace where new technologies have increased skill demands for literacy and math.
