It was a great weekend for the MCC softball team
as it defeated Iowa State University in Ames 4-2 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 17).

Backed by great defense and strong hitting, freshman pitcher Katie Watkinson scattered six hits and gave up two runs en route to the complete game victory.

Mallory Manning hit a two run home run to deep center field in the second inning to put the Cardinals out in front 2-0. In the third Kacie Eagle lead off with a double to right center followed by an RBI single by Brooke Kaalberg to push the lead to 3-0 after three innings.

Strong defense and great pitching held the Cyclones scoreless for 5 innings while the Cardinals pushed another run across in the sixth inning with Emily Madsen's single followed by Rachel Ingstad reaching base on an infield error. That set the stage for Sarah Saladino who ripped a single down the right field line to score Emily Madsen and extend the lead to 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Cyclone's scored one in the sixth and plated one in the seventh before Katie Watkinson slammed the door, striking out the final two ISU hitters.

The Cardinals will be on the road Wednesday (Sept. 20) against William Penn University and home this coming Saturday (Sept. 23) to face Southeastern CC at 11 a.m. and Kirkwood Community College at 3 p.m. If you get the chance stop down and watch some great softball action
