   Cardinals sweep Kirkwood

Cardinals work overtime for win

CEDAR RAPIDS – Muscatine Community College’s baseball team worked an extra inning to complete a sweep of Kirkwood Community College on the road on Thursday.

The Cardinals opened with a  13-4 victory and then out-battled Kirkwood 6-5 in eight innings in the nightcap.

Coach Dave Barb’s squad trailed 4-0 going into the fifth inning of the final game, but erupted for a five-run fifth to take the lead.

During the rally, Elliott Kelso led off with a double and Hector Ortiz followed with an RBI double. Javy Rijos kept things going with an RBI double before Aaron Jarosh reached base on an error.

With two outs, Heriberto Santana hit a three-run homer just past the 390-foot sign that gave the Cardinals the lead.

Kirkwood came back to tie the game with a run in the sixth to send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Santana led off with a double and, after two strikeouts, Kelso walked and David Hart delivered an RBI single to bring home the winning run.

Manny Reyes, pitching in relief, earned the win. He struck out four, walked none and hit two batters with pitches.

In the opener, Alex Gale improved to 2-0 on the mound by going the distance. He yielded four runs on six hits, struck out five and walked one.

Gadiel Robles, who had three hits in the opener, had a two-run triple in the seventh for MCC.

Wilton native Jeremy Weih caught the opening game for Kirkwood and had two hits and an RBI in the nightcap.

The Cardinals, now 6-2 on the season, hosts Indian Hills and South Suburban Saturday at Tom Bruner Field, starting at 11 a.m.
