Everyone knows that research plays a big role in the life of
every college student. In today’s internet world, finding the
answers to those questions has become even easier. Assisting in
that effort are the libraries at Muscatine, Scott and Clinton Community
Colleges. Each of the libraries can point the way to many
online resources. Here’s just some of what’s
available:
Search Engines: Most people
are probably already familiar with these sites. Simply type in what
you are looking for and the site will present you with a multitude
of related sites and information. Possibly the most popular of
these is Google at www.google.com
Metasearches: These are nifty sites that
actually go out and simultaneously search the information that is
available on a number of different search engines. Dogpile, www.dogpile.com, for instance goes out and
“retrieves” information from Google, Yahoo and others,
and then provides the users of the “best of breed” from
those many sites.
Librarians Index: The Librarians Index of the
Internet, lii.org, allows the user to search a compilation of
sites that have been personally selected by librarians.
INFOMINE: Compiled by the University of
California and located at infomine.ucr.edu, INFOMINE is a
unique Web resource featuring organized access to university level
research and educational tools on the Internet. A virtual library,
INFOMINE is notable
Tutorials: For more information about
performing research on the web, there are many tutorials available
that walk the user through the process. Two of these are Pandia
Goalgetter: A Short and Easy Internet Search Tutorial, www.pandia.com/goalgetter, and Purdue
University’s Searching the World Wide Web at owl.english.purdue.edu/internet/search
