It's no longer a man's world. Careers that might have been thought of as "men only" in years gone by are now open to women as well.
So, just what is a non-traditional career? The US Department of Labor defines a non-traditional career field as one in which 25% or less of those individuals employed in that area are women. Just over half of all working women are employed in what are considered to be more traditional, low paying fields. Meanwhile, those women who opt for more non-traditional careers make 20-30% more than those who work in traditional fields.
Not all non-traditional jobs involve heavy labor. Many emerging fields, especially technology fields, offer great job prospects and wages without hard labor.
We say it's not a man's world anymore because more and more women are entering what might be considered non-traditional fields. Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges provide training for a number of these careers. Listed to the right is information about some of them.
