Hybrid classes
The best of both worlds
With this new "hybrid" format, a portion of the classes are delivered via the internet, online with the remainder taught in the actual classroom or, in the case of science classes, in the lab.
The online portion allows students to complete classwork via their computer, at the time that is most convenient for them. The classroom portion, meanwhile, allows for closer interaction with fellow students.
The actual amount of time spent online vs. the classroom varies, depending on the class. Most classes formally meet just once a week, though there are some exceptions.
She said hybrid classes are especially suited for students who are interested in taking online classes but aren't quite sure they're ready to take the full plunge.
"The students know that, at least once a week, they will still be meeting with that instructor and be able to ask questions face-to-face," she said.
The colleges are beginning with a limited schedule of hybrid classes this spring with plans to expand the format in future terms. Classes beginning in January include: Basic Chemistry and Principles of Sociology at Clinton Community College; Survey of Film and English Composition I at Muscatine Community College; and Contemporary World Issues and Principles of Sociology at Scott Community College.
Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges continue to offer more than 100 online classes each semester. Students have the option of taking just a few classes to complete their college degree, or earning their entire Associate in Arts Degree via the internet.
Online classes continue to be a growing segment of the colleges' student population. Currently more than 1,300 students are taking online classes at the three colleges.
