
Job Outlook
The Occupational Outlook Handbook says that there will more job openings in the next several years than there are trained workers to fill them. Greater use of computers in the manufacturing sector has led to a shortage of qualified workers.
Locally, the Skills 2000 survey
conducted by the Eastern Iowa Community College District indicated
a coming need for more than 5,000 people in manufacturing
technology, including machine operators and fabricators.
Earnings
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the middle 50 percent of machinist employed by industry earned $10.39 to $11.43 an hour.
