EICCD provides a number of programs for adults to brush up on reading, math, writing and English.
Programs are free and include, Adult Literacy, General Education Development (GED), and English as a Second Language (ESL). Classes are offered at Clinton, Muscatine, and Davenport. Classes are also available at Columbus Junction, Maquoketa, and West Liberty.

Adult Basic Education / GED
ABE/GED classes develop reading, writing, speaking and math skills. Programming is designed to help anyone 17 years of age or older not enrolled in high school to take the steps necessary toward passing the GED exam and beyond.

Enrolling / Orientation
Students desiring to enroll in ABE/GED/ESL Prep classes must attend an orientation session. In orientation students will be given an overview of the Prep programs as well as an assessment of their reading and math. The results from the orientation will help the faculty and staff to develop individual programs of study for students to guide them toward their personal academic goals.

GED
GED classes prepare adults for the GED test. Small group and computer instruction support students to progress though the 5 GED subject areas.

English Language Learners (ELL)
English as a Second Language (ESL)
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
This Prep class will expand English communication skills for students who are not native English speakers. Classroom, small group and computer instruction are designed to promote reading, writing, listening, speaking, and pronunciation.
Students will learn about daily communication, conducting business and how to interact in the community. ESL classes at CCC, MCC, and CAC are non-credit, there is assistance to students who are interested in transferring to college credit ESL programs at Scott Community College.
Family Literacy - this program is designed for ESL students and their families. While the parents are studying English and citizenship their children have the opportunity to work on their reading and motor skills as well as having parent and child time together.
Programming is available at CCC, MCC, and CAC. Citizenship classes and GED/ESL en Español are available at CAC.

GED Test Information
The GED test provides individuals who did not complete high school the opportunity to receive their high school equivalency diploma. To earn his or her GED, the candidate must successfully complete 5 multiple-choice tests. The GED tests are designed to measure the important general knowledge, reading, processing information, solving problems and critical thinking skills usually learned during the four years of high school.
GED tests are developed by the American Council of Education.
To protect an examinee’s privacy and establish formal notification regarding ownership of test scores and other data, the GED Testing Service has developed the following documents:

GED Testing
Costs: $75 - cash or money order for Iowa Residence and $100 for Illinois.
Scores: A minimum standard score of 410 is needed to pass each test, an average score of 450 is needed on all 5 tests with a minimum of 2250 points is needed to earn the GED diploma.
Eligibility: Individuals 17 years of age and older who have not graduated from an accredited high school or who have not received a high school equivalency diploma and who are not currently enrolled in a regular high school are eligible to take the GED tests. Candidates who are 16 may test if they have a court order signed by a judge.
Required Paperwork: Verification that a candidate is not enrolled in high school is required for individuals who are 18 years of age or younger. Written permission to test is required from a parent or guardian for candidates younger then 18.
Government ID and Social Security card.
A photo ID is required at each testing session to verify the testing candidate's identity.
Re Testing: There is a $10 retesting fee for each test that must be retaken. Tests cannot be retaken without instructor verification of additional study.
Diploma Issuance: Eastern Iowa Community College District will issue an official transcript upon completion of the test battery. The official Equivalency Diploma issued by the Iowa Department of Education is issued to the candidate approximately 6 weeks after the completion of the GED tests. Diplomas for younger candidates, 18 years of age or older, will not be issued until after the original high school class has graduated.
Accommodations: The GED Testing Service (GEDTS) provides accommodations for examinees with documented disabilities that can interfere with the successful completion of taking the GED tests under standard testing conditions. It is the responsibility of the examinee to provide and submit to GEDTS disability documentation from a Professional Diagnostician. Please contact examination site.

GED Scholarships
Anyone who receives a GED from CCC/MCC/CAC will be given a scholarship for 3 credit hours free at CCC/MCC/SCC. The scholarship can be used for non-credit classes ($306) (Certified Nurses Aid) or any non credit program that will help you succeed in getting a better job.

Important note about
online companies
Persons seeking to meet the Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma requirements should be aware of companies that claim to offer the Test of General Educational Development (GED) over the Internet or through correspondence courses.
There are no online or correspondence testing programs recognized by the General Educational Development Testing Service (GEDTS) of the American Council of Education (ACE). Persons can ONLY take the Official GED Test Battery at an approved Iowa GED test center.
