Honors Program
The S.C.C. Honors Program seeks to add special challenges, encouragement, and recognition to the academic careers of our outstanding students. In addition, participants are eligible to apply for special Honors Program scholarships.

The SCC Honors Program is open to every student who qualifies, whether incoming or currently enrolled, in both Arts and Sciences and Applied Technologies. To be eligible, a current SCC student must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours of college-level courses and have a minimum of cumulative GPA of 3.5

Incoming high school students are eligible if they meet one of the following criteria: a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5; a minimum ACT of 25; or a minimum SAT score of 1000.

The program consists of the completion of 4 Honors courses.  Some of the courses are designed by students and completed with the guidance of a faculty mentor. Typically, a student takes one class per semester. The following are our Honors courses:

Honors Independent Study is a 1-credit course that gives the student an opportunity to learn more about a topic of interest.  In the past, some of the projects have included the writing of HTML code for a web page for the Honors Program, research on chemicals released into the Mississippi, and the creation of a learning tool for students in the Electroneurodiagnostic program. These studies have taken the form of traditional research papers, videotapes, documentaries, web pages, brochures, scientific experiments, and computer programs. The Honors Independent Study was created for those students who would like to design a course specific to their academic needs.

Honors Seminar is a 3-credit course that changes topics each semester.  The Honors Seminar is designed for students who want to develop their skills in critical, creative, and independent thinking to a higher level.

Honors Service Project is a 1-credit course that allows the student to perform 33 hours of community service while earning credit and a grade.  Ideally, the student will be placed at an organization that has connections to the student's major. This can be taken after successful completion of the Honors Independent Study or the Honors Seminar. This is the only Honors Course that can be taken during the Summer.  With the Service Project Mentor’s help, the student chooses a not-for-profit, service organization that will allow the student to take part in activities that are directly related to a chosen career field.

If you are interested in participating in S.C.C. Honors Program and would like to enroll in one or more of the Honors courses described above, you must contact Dr. Nnachi Umennachi, (Room 1220; Phone: 441-4329; Email: numennachi@eicc.edu), or  Jan Weis (Room 2015; Phone: 441-4027; Email:jweis@eicc.edu) the Honors Co-coordinators for information and registration at any time. Endeavor to graduate from Scott Community College with more than a Diploma—GRADUATE WITH HONORS!
