Online Stafford Loan Process

You must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and also have received a Financial Aid Award letter indicating your eligibility for Stafford loans before completing the loan application process.

Important!
Part of the process of applying for a Federal Stafford Loan is the selection of a lender. You may borrow from any lender; however a Credit Union may require you to be a member to borrow funds.   Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges do not support preferred lender lists.

You must select your own lender; the Financial Aid Office cannot do this for you.

Many lenders participate in the Federal Stafford student loan program. Keep in mind that a lender who initially funds the loan may eventually sell the loan to a servicer which will be your primary contact for questions related to your student loan account.

If you borrowed previously, it is best to remain with the same lender in order to simplify repayment. If you are a new borrower, below are some things that
you may wish to consider when choosing a lender:

  • Does the lender/servicer offer reliable customer service?
  • Am I able to reach a knowledgeable customer service representative quickly?
  • Does the lender offer any up-front discounts or benefits on the interest rate and/or terms of my loan?
  • Does the lender offer any repayment benefits, such as rewards for paying on time or for making payments electronically? Can I easily request and obtain repayment assistance?
  • Will my lender sell my loan to a loan servicing agency?

You may want to conduct some web searches to gather specific data about prospective lender options.

If you would like to request a list of lenders that student and parent borrowers have used in the past at Clinton, Muscatine or Scott Community Colleges, please click the Prior Lenders link at right.

All student loans will be disbursed in two installments. If your loan period is for both the Fall and Spring semesters, your second disbursement will not be disbursed until the Spring term. If your loan period is only for one semester, your second disburse¬ment will be made approximately mid-term of that semester.

The earliest date student loan refund checks will be mailed is approximately four weeks after the start of the semester. All first-time borrowers have a mandatory thirty-day waiting period before they receive their first disbursement. The earliest date student loan refund checks will be mailed to first-time borrowers is approxi¬mately six weeks after the semester begins. Refund checks are mailed directly to the student from the EICCD District Office every Friday. Your check will be sent to the address that you have on file at the College.
